What Is the Difference Between a Sober Living Facility and an Extended Rehab Facility?

Question by Blair: What is the difference between a sober living facility and an extended rehab facility?
When a person leaves a 30 day alcohol rehab facility and is faced with many options, what do they do? Obviously 30 days is not enough for a very successful recovery so extended treatment is often neccessary. There is sober living houses and there are 90 day treatment programs that follw the initial 30 day treatment. What is the main difference between the two?

Hi – at some point your friend will have to stand on their feet. It makes no difference if it is after one day or one year. Treatment is a very misleading definiton – I personally am not a fan of rehabs and find them misleading. At most, this type of help can only support the persons desire to abstain – it rarely gives them that desire.

For an ongoing support I would recommend the principles of smartrecovery.org, which is based on Rational Emotive Behaviour Therapy.

As a friend to them it is best not to get in the way, neither to be sympathetic and to move on without guilt or judgement if they are not ready to give up (unless you want such a situation).
