I have been hearing a lot of talk about 2012, but not anything to actually go on. I know they made a movie about it but is it actually supposed to happen or is it a Hollywood stunt?

This is merely a silly hoax composed entirely of absurd lies. It began in 1988 with Jose Arguelles’ book “The Mayan Factor” that real Mayan scholars know is trash. He said and did many crazy things. Some say he burned out his brain with drug abuse. He said the long Mayan calendar cycle ended in 1999, and that meant the world also ended. Nancy Lieder, another nut, recycled that hoax and added nonsense about a fictional planet called Niburu. She said the End was in 2003. After her, other charlatans added more details and said the End is in 2012. The prediction has already failed twice and will fail the third time in 2012. It is likely that someone will recycle it again and choose 2016-2020 as the date of the End.
