I saw something on tv about those kinds of centers once. They’re pretty normal places. You’ll get therapy, but you’ll also spend some social time with other patients, and have some time to do something alone, so bring a book to read.

Well, it depends on your eating disorder, and it depends on the severity of your eating disorder and it depends on the specific treatment center. I am not familiar with Walden, but I am familiar with other inpatient eating disorder treatment centers.

You will spend time close to the nurse’s station in the beginning. Your food will be monitored closely. You will have to eat what they give you to eat. They will monitor your bathroom trips and depending on your specific situation, your showers may be monitored as well.

You will have vitals taken daily – that means weight, blood pressure, etc. In the beginning they will also do a lot of medical testing – blood tests, other tests as needed for your specific condition. You will be assigned a therapist and see that person for a specified number of sessions each week. You will probably also participate in family therapy if your family is close by. Otherwise your family will probably have to travel to Walden at specific intervals for counseling sessions, or you will do them over the phone.

You will also see a psychiatrist and you may undergo medication treatment.

You will participate in group therapy sessions, and if you have specific psychiatric issues along with your eating disorder, you will probably participate in specific groups for that as well. Often groups consist of talk therapy, art therapy, usually some type of movement therapy and other types of therapy depending on the institution.

As time goes on and you prove you are making progress, you will have more latitude to choose your own meals. Eventually you will not have to be monitored during your meals.

Some residential treatment facilities graduate you into off-site trips or time back with your family. This gives you the opportunity to try eating outside the facility in a more real-life situation.

I would love to hear about your experiences when you get out. You can post your story on my website using the link below.

I wish you the best of luck. I hope this is the beginning of complete recovery for you.
