i have a mother who is on disability for Schizophrenic Paranoid Personality Disorder…she knows and i know she needs to seek treatment. she is on disability for mental illness. I am telling her that in order for the doctor to properly diagnose and treat her she needs to to be completely honest and that includes her addiction to methamphetamine and marijuana. However she says she will not tell the doctor, because in turn the doctor will report her to disibilty and they will stop sending her checks. my understanding is that drug addiction is a huge coping mechanism for mental/personality disorders and would think the government would treat the addiction as one of the symptoms of her disease. I am in contact with her doctor and she is not honest with him i will have to tell him for her. Can the Social Security administration sanction your disability payments because you are on drugs?
My mother does not intend on staying on drugs she want wants to help. If she got sober went through a program and developed more positive ways to cope with her illness. she would realize that the drugs are a short temporary relief to her condition. she doesn’t know that their are more effective, longer lasting remedies. drug addiction is just one of the many symptoms of her disease. Its not a choice…so she needs help, but will suffer consequences if she is honest…she will lose her insurance never get the help she needs and continue her drug abuse…or lie about it, and receive inadequate treatment that she has to self medicate… either way if she doesnt include drug rehabilitaion in her treatment she will not get through this. If her honesty gets her disibility cut she will not get through this …im at lost…. drug addiction is an epidemic in this country… a disease…and it needs to be treated as such… how are people suppose to get help without being judged, persec
